Sri Lanka is a multi ethnic and multi religious country. Beside from Buddhism people of Sri Lanka follows other religions like Islam, Hinduism and Christianity.
70% of the population of Sri Lanka follows Buddhism making it the major religion of the country, according to traditional Sri Lankan chronicles, Buddhism was introduced into Sri Lanka in the 2nd century BCE.
Islam was brought to Sri Lanka by Arab traders over the course of many centuries. 8 % of the population of the country follows Islam.
7 % of the population now follows Hinduism. Hinduism was established in Sri Lanka by invaders and migrants from southern India.
Christianity is followed around 6 % of the population. Christianity was introduced by European colonists in the 16th century.
